Cocker Spaniels are the smallest of the sporting breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. In every other country these beauties are called American Cocker Spaniels. They are lively, merry little dogs with a coat that can be very full. Cockers come in a variety of colors, only some of which are recognized by the AKC. Blacks (which includes Black & Tans), Parti-colored, and ASCOB (Any Solid Color Other than Black) are the three varieties. You can also find sables, roans (considered parti-colored) and merles.

Cocker Spaniels LOVE people. They want to be with their people all the time. They do not do very well as backyard dogs, kennel dogs, or ignored dogs. Their beautiful coats require regular trims and frequent brushing & bathing. Even if cockers are kept clipped close they still require regular grooming.

Cockers traditionally have had a lot of health issues. These run the range from bad skin, ear infections, hip displaysia, bad teeth, allergies, cherry eye, glaucoma, seizures.. the list goes on and on. They seem to be prone to just about every canine health concern. For this reason, health testing for breeding cockers is crucial. Even champion bloodlines can carry health issues. Testing does not guarantee freedom from health issues, but its an important step to eliminating some of the worst problems from our beloved pets.
